Travertine Home :: Imported Jerusalem Limestone Tiles
Our Jerusalem Limestone comes from Mainland Egypt and the Sinai peninsula. This area was all once sea. Sediment, coral fragments and the remains of sea mammals sank to the bottom of the sea 300 million years ago. Time and pressure did the rest. The high levels of lime mud and depth of the sea results in a high concentration of dolomite and crystalised lime in Egyptian limestone, which is why it is harder and denser than other stones. Fossils and impurities within the limestone provide the intricate patterning.
